About the Wairamarama
Wairamarama is a hill country, rural community located midway between the Waikato River and the west coast in the North Waikato, and is mostly made up of sheep and beef farms and lifestyle blocks. Wairamarama families have a long history of community involvement and participation, since the first community building was erected in 1916. This community space was a school and a church for 42 years before being repurposed as shearers quarters on a nearby farm. A larger community hall was built in 1958-1959 to cater for the growing population.

For over 100 years, the Wairamarama community has adapted to meet the changing needs of its people. Given the increase in farming regulations, the change in land use, and the increased frequency of adverse events, there is a need to adapt and evolve again.
In 2021, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) recognised an opportunity to help us help ourselves and generously provided funding to support a resilience plan to develop a thriving and sustainable community, with a strong focus on improving wellbeing, providing community services, and enhancing our environment.
Our work in the community is ongoing as we endeavour to overcome the challenges of isolation and climate change.
